SPHK1 (Sphingosine Kinase 1) is a protein coding gene located on human chromosome 17q25.1. SPHK1 is also known as SPHK. The human SPHK1 gene encodes a 42518 Da protein containing 384 amino acids. The SPHK1 protein is ubiquitously expressed in gall bladder, esophagus and other tissues. Among its related pathways are Chaperonin-mediated protein folding and Signaling by GPCR. SPHK1 is related to magnesium ion binding and protein phosphatase 2A binding. SPHK2 is an important paralog of SPHK1 gene. SPHK1 is associated with some diseases, including Renal Fibrosis and Glioblastoma Multiforme.

      SPHK1, also known as sphingosine Kinase 1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to form sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). S1P exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities including cell proliferation, survival, migration, cytoskeletal organization, and morphogenesis. It is a ligand for cell surface G protein-coupled receptors. SPHK 1 is a potential therapeutic target for the control of cancer and inflammation. SPHK1 plays a key role in TNF-alpha signaling and the NF-kappa-B activation pathway important in inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and immune processes.
