Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2) is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, which is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and tumor invasion and metastasis. In the past few years, MMPs overexpression has been intensively investigated as potential biomarkers and unfavorable factors in a range of types of cancer including Colorectal cancer. MMP2 gene encodes an enzyme which degrades the major structural component of basement membranes, type IV collagen, and thus plays an important role in promoting the invasion and metastasis of tumor cell. Overexpression of MMP2 has been detected in bladder cancer, oral carcinoma, Colorectal cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, as well as gastric cancer.
