Aconitase 1/ACO1 Protein

Aconitase 1/ACO1 protein function

Iron sensor. Binds a 4Fe-4S cluster and functions as aconitase when cellular iron levels are high. Functions as mRNA binding protein that regulates uptake, sequestration and utilization of iron when cellular iron levels are low. Binds to iron-responsive elements (IRES) in target mRNA species when iron levels are low. Binding of a 4Fe-4S cluster precludes RNA binding. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:1946430, ECO:0000269|PubMed:8041788}.; Catalyzes the isomerization of citrate to isocitrate via cis-aconitate. {ECO:0000250}.

Aconitase 1/ACO1 Gene

ACO1 gene / cDNA is a protein-coding gene which located on 9p21.1. The ACO1 gene is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, zebrafish, fruit fly, mosquito, C.elegans, A.thaliana, rice, and frog.241 organisms have orthologs with human gene ACO1.
